Joanna Leung, Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist, therapist

You might have reached this website because you are actively looking for some support or you are passively curious about what support can be like.  No matter the reason, I’m glad that you have reached my website.

I’m a clinical psychologist who has been in practice for a decade. I work with clients with concerns of anxiety, depression and traumatic experiences.  I take my time to understand each person developmentally, culturally, and systematically, and collaboratively create a treatment plan that fits the client’s needs.

Treatment approach can vary for different clients based on their functioning and needs. I have been trained in different therapy modalities. Together, we can discuss the treatment approach that would be most beneficial to you.

I have experiences in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Also, I have been trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is an empirically supported therapy that can help individuals heal from traumatic and other negative experiences locked inside. If you are curious, you can learn more about EMDR in this introductory video.

Along with my personal yoga practice of 10 plus years and 200-hr. yoga teacher certification, I also offer mindfulness-based therapy. I enjoy meeting anyone who enters my office with a mindful presence, openness, and acceptance and helping others develop these qualities for themselves.

If you are curious, you have taken the first step on your journey. With love and attention comes freedom and healing.

My office is located at 545 Rainier Blvd North, Suite 21b

In time of changes, breathing can be relaxing and calming

Connecting with your breathing can begin this moment. Starting now, notice your breathing, breathe in and breathe out. Notice the rise of the in-breath and the fall of the out-breath, and how it feels in your body. You can also try to gently repeat, “I’m breathing in. I’m breathing out” to deepen the awareness. Breathing can help our body relax and feel calmer.

Adaptation in Time of Covid Pandemic

We are presently confronted with daily changes.  We can really notice them when we slow down and they can be pretty scary and frustrating.  It is our human nature to desire sameness and consistency.  It allows us to practice and master.  However, as much as we like things to be the same, they just are not or cannot.  This is when remembering our other human nature to adapt can be helpful.   We are designed and wired to adapt too.  In fact, we have evolved for millions of years and will continue.  When we start to pay attention to this innate human nature, we can start to use it and perhaps appreciate it.  We might then be able to resist the fight to keep things the same and began to open ourselves to the possibility that we can adapt and maybe even thrive.   The Covid Pandemic has created many unexpected and perhaps unwanted changes in our lives.  Therapy can be a place to explore your feeling, your attitude, and your problem-solving ways to help you adapt in this changing time.
